Garden Snails

A passionate home gardener, Zrufao Fao Iddris recently shared a frustrating yet thought-provoking experience on the Home Gardening Ghana Facebook page. Their once-thriving mini lettuce garden has turned into a breeding ground for snails, with more than 20 snails invading daily! Despite pleading with them to leave some lettuce behind, these persistent mollusks have now expanded their territory—attacking parsley, basil, coriander, and even the sacks where sweet potatoes are growing.

While the snail invasion has been overwhelming, Zrufao finds it difficult to consume them—an emotional dilemma that many can relate to. But instead of seeing them as mere pests, they are now considering an alternative solution: snail farming.

Turning a Problem into an Opportunity: Snail Farming

Rather than battling the endless cycle of snail reproduction, Zrufao is now exploring the possibility of snail farming as a way to control the population while turning the challenge into a profitable venture. Snail farming, also known as heliciculture, is a lucrative and sustainable agricultural business with high demand in the food and cosmetics industries.

Getting Started with Snail Farming

Here are a few basic steps for those considering snail farming:

✅ Identify and separate the snails – Choose the largest and healthiest ones for breeding.

✅ Build a controlled snail habitat – A moist, shaded environment with good ventilation is ideal.

✅ Provide proper food – Snails thrive on vegetables, fruits, and calcium-rich feeds.

✅ Monitor reproduction – Since they reproduce quickly, managing population growth is key.

✅ Protect from predators – Birds, rats, and even ants can be threats to snail farms.

By redirecting the problem into a productive solution, Zrufao could turn an unwanted invasion into a business opportunity!

What do you think—should they give snail farming a shot? Have you ever faced a similar challenge in your home garden? Share your experiences!
